Solar-Powered Commuinty Farm

The Problem

Puerto Rico faces two crises every single week:

no power and no affordable food.

Families lose electricity for hours — sometimes days.

Refrigerators shut down.

Food goes bad.

Medicine spoils.

People can’t cook, can’t charge phones, can’t work online.

At the same time, the island imports almost 85% of its food, making prices higher and access harder for low-income communities, elders, students, and people in recovery.

When the lights go out and food prices rise, our communities suffer the most.

No Puerto Rican family should feel powerless — literally or emotionally.

Our Solution

Dos Abuelas Cares is building Puerto Rico’s first solar-powered community farms — places where families can access:

Fresh fruits and vegetables

Clean, consistent solar energy

Safe gathering space during outages

Community charging stations

Refrigerated food during blackouts

A calm environment for youth and people in recovery

Hands-on training in farming and solar technology

We grow food from our land.

We create power from our sun.

And we put that food and power back into the hands of our communities.

When the grid fails, our farms stay on.

When the supermarkets raise prices, our farms keep producing.

When people feel alone, our farms bring them together.

WHY IT MATTERS

A solar-powered community farm is more than a farm — it’s survival.

It gives families:

A place to get food when stores are empty

A place to stay cool when homes lose power

A place to charge phones and stay connected

A place to gather, learn, and heal

A place to find stability in unstable times

It protects elders.

It empowers youth.

It supports people in recovery.

It strengthens entire barrios.

This is resilience.

This is independence.

This is Puerto Rico taking care of Puerto Rico.
